The Impact of Severe Weather on Public Health and the Economy
Data from the NOAA Storm Database is used to determine which severe weather events are the most harmful with respect to population health and which have the greatest economic consequences. The data suggests that since 1950 tornadoes have caused more fatalities and injuries than any other severe weather event. The data also suggests flooding has the greatest economic consequence. However, the methodology behind the data collection is likely underestimating the economic damage of other weather events.
