Mackenzie River basin snow water equivalent
This is a map of on-the-ground snow surveys in the Mackenzie River basin for Spring 2024, created by the Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC) within the Government of the Northwest Territories. Snow surveys can give us an idea of how much water will be produced when the snow melts in the spring. This value is called the ‘Snow Water Equivalent’ or ‘SWE’. The map compares SWE values collected in 2024 relative to average values. Clicking on each dot will display the amount of SWE and the snow depth measured at each site, as well as the number of years that data have been collected. ECC staff collected the data in the NWT, while data from outside of the NWT was sourced from our neighbouring jurisdictions (Yukon, British Columbia, and Alberta). ECC would also like to thank the Northwest Territories Power Corporation for their ongoing support of the snow survey program.
