ASSESSMENT 3- Cost of Living Crisis in Australia: CPI Insights
This project presents a comprehensive and interactive visual exploration of Australia’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) trends using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). With rising inflation and public concern over affordability, this dashboard was developed to help users understand the historical and recent trends in cost of living by category — specifically focusing on overall CPI, Housing, Food, and Transport. Using the R programming language within Posit Cloud, I created a flexdashboard web application that enables intuitive, side-by-side comparison of different CPI dimensions. The visuals are powered by ggplot2 and enhanced with interactivity using plotly. The dashboard includes: Overview tab: Shows the long-term trend of All Groups CPI, yearly percentage change, and a distribution histogram. Housing CPI tab: Displays housing-related CPI changes, quarterly shifts, and a smoothed trend line. Food & Transport tab: Compares trends between Food and Transport indices, including relative growth from a common base and a faceted breakdown. These visualisations aim to provide stakeholders — such as policymakers, economists, and the public — with clear insights into how essential categories have changed over time and contributed to the broader cost-of-living crisis.
