Death: What Can We Do About It?
The project “Death: What Can We Do About It?” explores the factors we can and cannot control and highlights how they are often intertwined. The project uses Virginia County data from Social Explorer, which draws on data from the Census, the FBI Crime Reporting Program, and the Virginia Department of Health. Each observation within the data set is a county in Virginia. The project uses: population density, gender dominance, and race dominance within the counties, income, access to primary care and mental health providers, insurance rates, drinking/smoking, food access, violent crimes, and overdose rates to shape the project to focus on health and demographic factors. The project explores the health and demographic factors within and beyond our control that influence when we die, using premature death as a lens to understand what shapes our morality.
