Economic Capacity and Donor Generosity: Determinants of Bilateral Aid to Ukraine
This project examines how donor characteristics—economic size, EU membership, and geographic proximity—shape cross-country differences in bilateral aid commitments to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Using data from the Kiel Institute, it shows that GDP is the strongest predictor of aid, while proximity and institutional arrangements help explain variation and correct common misconceptions about who bears the financial burden of supporting Ukraine.
