Estimates of expenditure-based GDP are released quarterly by Statistics Canada as part of the national accounts. These estimates are a vital report on the state of aggregate demand by each of the five institutional sectors: households, non-profit institutions serving households (NPISH), businesses, governments and non-residents. The quarterly estimates are released two months after the reference quarter and it would be beneficial if they could be published in a more timely manner. One way to address this is to calculate estimates on a monthly basis, making use of several closely related monthly time series. This note describes the methodology and results of an exercise of this kind.
