Using Social Disorganization Theory to Understand Police-Community Interaction in a Multi-Ethnic City: A Quantitative Study on Police Behavior in San Diego
Abstract
Recent expansions of social disorganization theory focus on minority communities, highlighting links between racial segregation and crime, particularly for Black communities. Much of the existing literature has failed to examine this relationship for non-Black communities and it has often neglected to examine connections to policing. This study adds to this literature by analyzing San Diego, a diverse community, and examining relationships between community attributes and police reports of crime. This study asks: 1) Do under resourced and under serviced communities in San Diego City experience more law enforcement activity? 2) Do communities with large minority populations have a greater police presence compared to communities that have larger white populations? In this study I amassed, cleaned, and analyzed 21,138 police reports that I matched to census tracts within San Diego. I estimated negative binomial regression models of the relationships between community characteristics and police reports of crime. Results indicate that communities with greater percentages of foreign- born populations, divorced, or low homeownership have more police reports. In contrast, communities with large Asian or Hispanic populations, high median income, or high homeownership have fewer police reports. This study suggests a need for community enriching programs, and a deeper analysis between law enforcement and immigrant communities in multi-ethnic cities.

An Analysis on San Diego County and San Diego City
I am taking an in-depth look into San Diego County's racial/ethnic demographics and median household income. My goal is to analyze and interpret the relationship between median household income and racial/ethnic demographics within the county to determine if there is any income disparity between races/ethnicities. In addition, I will be taking a closer look at San Diego City, where I grew up and continue to reside and analyze segregation and income differences. I will be using the 5-year American Community Survey data for 2018 to study my research question. As well as utilizing R Studio to conduct quantitative and spatial analysis.
