“Living in Different Americas”: Forecasting Income Inequality in American Macroeconomics
We often hear that Americans live in wholly different economies, and that we “live in different Americas”. This discussion was again brought to light in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, in which certain households seemed to disproportionately be affected by increasing unemployment and decreasing demand for goods and services while others seemed to fair much better, some in much better financial health a year in. In light of the developing situation, using data from the Tax Policy Center1 from 1979-2017, this presentation will attempt to forecast the incomes of all five quintiles and top 1% of household incomes independent of each other and provide metrics to further visualize the results. We see that not only will the highest 1% of earners continue to rise much quicker than the other quintiles, it makes up for a good deal of the overall growth in the economy. Thus, the Gini index only increases over time.
