Exploring Taxable Value per Acre by Land Use Type in Johnson City, Tennessee 2023
For cities, land is a limited resource, and land use regulations can impact the economic productivity of available land, measured by the taxable value per acre. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research into the relationship between land use and its associated economic productivity to inform policy decisions regarding land use regulation. Ultimately, this research answers: how does a parcel’s land use type impact the taxable value per acre within Johnson City?
Demonstrating Eigenvector Spatial Filtering with the Adespatial Package
In this demo, I walk through how to use the mem.select function from the adespatial package in R to reduce a linear model's residual spatial autocorrelation. The mem.select function is designed to identify eigenvectors for eigenvector spatial filtering implementation.
Lab 5: Working with Census data using Tidycensus
The US Census Bureau collects and shares immense amounts of data on the US population to better inform policy decisions and ensure equal representation when drawing legislative districts. Much of the data is collected through the American Community Survey (ACS), which surveys households across the country on everything from demographics to home characteristics. Using those survey answers, the Census Bureau creates estimates for the various enumeration areas, e.g., block groups, tracts, counties, states. While the estimates are open to the public, navigating through the Census Bureau’s website or using the API can be tricky. However, the tidycensus package in R makes it easy to retrieve census data in a tidy format, making it ready for many forms of analysis. In this report, I’ll explore how tidycensus can be used to create informative visuals out of ACS data. Part A will explore the percentage of people with graduate degrees for each Tennessee county. Part B will map the median year structures were built by census block groups in Davidson County.
Lab 4A: Mapping Tornadoes in Oklahoma 2016-2021
In this section, tornado data from 2016 to 2021 in Oklahoma will be explored. Exercise 1 focuses on mapping both point and path data by the year the tornadoes took place. Exercise 2 and 3 are concerned with the density of tornadoes in each county. Exercise 2 explores the data by year, and Exercise 3 explores how the number of quantile breaks impacts how a map appears.
Lab4B: Mapping Tennessee FastTrack Project Data in Leaflet
Using the Leaflet package in R, FastTrack Projects from 2011 to 2023 are mapped according to the investment size.
Lab 3: Understanding the FastTrack Program
In this lab for GEOG588, I take a look at Tennessee's FastTrack grant program to see where jobs created through the program are going and how much is being spent in relation to those new jobs.
