Talk given at Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center lunch seminar series during January 2024. The AI Institute for Dynamical Systems and the role of AI for bat conservation: In this talk, I will provide background information on the AI Institute, including a big-picture overview of how AI is being used for research at MSU and across the Institute. The talk will then transition to focus on the use of AI for bat conservation within the North American Bat monitoring program (NABat). Autonomous recording units (ARU) are used to collect bat-acoustic data for monitoring species distributions and relative activity of bat species over time. The volume of calls collected by ARUs during a single survey event necessitates the use of machine learning algorithms for automatic classification of calls to species. These ML-assigned species labels (AutoIDs) are imperfect and if misclassification is ignored in statistical modeling, results can be biased. I will present the evolution of the statistical work I have been involved in that aims to appropriately model ecological parameters of interest in the face of imperfectly observed AutoIDs. I'll conclude with future work related to reducing hidden costs associated with the verification data needed to fit the statistical model that best aligns with how the data generating process is believed to occur.
