Bike-Sharing and Cycling Infrastructure, Montreal
In this presentation, I explore bike-sharing and cycling infrastructure in Montreal and propose recommendations to enhance bike-sharing accessibility. I start with defining the bounding box for the city using the OpenStreetMap API to gather relevant data related to bike-sharing stations and cycling infrastructure in Montreal. Based on my analysis, I hypothesize that the low density of bike-sharing stations leads to the underutilization of cycling as a mode of transportation, contributing to increased air pollution in the city. I then visualize the data using a bar chart and a leaflet map, which highlight the locations of bike-sharing stations and cycling infrastructure throughout the city, and propose increasing the density of bike-sharing stations in Montreal using the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy's (ITDP) recommended density as a guide. Finally, I discuss the impact of implementing bike-sharing programs in cities and how increasing the availability of bike-sharing stations in Montreal can work towards a more sustainable future and positively impact the health and wellbeing of its citizens.
