SwiftKey Capstone Project Milestone Report
The aim of the John Hopkins University Capstone project in partnership with SwiftKey is to develop a predictive model of text starting with a really large, unstructured database of the English language. In order to get started with this, an exploratory analysis was performed on the data including looking at the distribution of unigrams (single words), bigrams (two consecutive words), trigrams and quadgrams for the 3 documents in the text collection (corpus), namely a blog file, a news file and a twitter file. Features of each document are presented in this report and will be used for building of the predictive model.

Identification of NOAA US storm events most harmful with respect to population health and those with greatest economic consequences between 1996 and 2011
In this report we aim to explore which storms and other severe weather events can cause both public health and economic problems for communities and municipalities. Specifically we are trying to answer the following two questions: 1) Across the United States, which types of events are most harmful with respect to population health? 2) Across the United States, which types of events have the greatest economic consequences? To answer these questions, we obtained storm data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) storm database. The events in the database start in the year 1950 and end in November 2011. However, to make a meaningful comparison we only used data from 1996 onwards on this was the first year where all weather events were reported. From these data, we found that the most event most harmful to the population, which we defined as the events leading to a combined 70% of all injuries and fatalities, are tornado, excessive heat, flood and lightning. A similar analysis run to identify the events with the greatest economic consequences shows that 70% of all combined property and crop damage is caused by thunderstorm wind, winter storm, flash flood and tornado.
