The black-tailed prairie dog was once an abundant North American mammal that lived in large colonies, that could contain many thousands of individuals. It's populations have been greatly reduced mainly by human-caused threats across prairie grasslands. This includes various pest controls measures, but prairie dogs are also threatened by disease. Colonies can still be found in isolated patches of viable prairie grassland and shrub habitat.
