The objective of the assignment was to tell a story on terrorism through data visualisation. Story: Terrorism What do you think of when you hear about hijacked planes, car bombs and explosives and mass shooting? Exactly, Terrorism, just the word throws an intense emotion and horror in our mind. One of the most saddened reality of humanity, yet despite its prevalence terrorism can be difficult to define and understand as it shares some characteristics of crime and traditional warfare but it doesn’t fit a square in either category. However, to get an overview of this homicide has affected our peace and security over the years, let’s look into a bar chart race of the number of fatalities from terrorist attack from 1970 to 2017. In 1970, pro rally attack occurred mostly in Western Europe and was rooted in communism. In 1980 we see the location and the attacks shift to south America with 33% and Central America 26% while the remaining was still rooted in communism. In 1990, both the location and the ideology of terrorism attack shifted, for the first time most of the terrorist attack shifted to the middle east and north Africa 224% and south Asian 23%. These are the areas where it is still prominent today and the driving ideology of terrorism shifted from communism to Islam. Since 2000 the middle east and the north African region alone with south Asian countries have accounted for 80% of the world’s terrorist attack. These regions include nation like Libya, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran. We have lost about a million people over 170 thousand terrorist attacks and I say its enough. You can’t understand terrorism and ways in which to combat terrorism from behind the desk, However, in this age of social media, we have an opportunity to influence the opinion of leaders and policymakers not just in our country but all over the world.
